Shape Properties unveils first look at Destination: Deerfoot City

Deerfoot Mall to be completely transformed into a new shopping experience

CALGARY, AB, February 4, 2015 – Shape Properties is thrilled to introduce Destination:  Deerfoot City, the major transformation of Deerfoot Mall. Newly released digital renderings and a fly-through video reveal a first look at the dynamic new urban redevelopment.

The Deerfoot City master plan completely transforms the existing mall. It also incorporates the vacant fields to the south, offering an enlarged site area that supports the development of multiple districts. “This large site, in a mature and established location, affords a rare opportunity to provide a full spectrum of retail, restaurants and services all on one site in a very deliberate, planned manner,” says Darren Kwiatkowski, Executive Vice President of Shape Properties.

At the core of the redevelopment, Deerfoot City is a pedestrian-friendly network of outdoor streets and plazas interspersed with indoor comforts. Fashion Row cuts through the centre of the development providing a street front shopping experience that culminates at a collection of restaurants and patios surrounding the Central Plaza. This strategic group of restaurants known as Restaurant Row is a key differentiator, offering an urban and eclectic collection of eateries.

“Deerfoot City will be unique to suburban Calgary, and will meet the growing demand from leading retailers and restaurants looking for creative new places with a vibrant, rich social experience and urban feel that differentiates them from traditional malls,” explains Kwiatkowski. “At the same time, the districts within the master plan enable us to cater to the significant passerby commuter traffic by placing general merchandise and quick grab- and-go type businesses on the periphery of the property for ease and convenience.”

The transformation of Deerfoot Mall will occur over several phases. This spring, the initial phase on the north side of the property will be completed, including GoodLife Fitness and a collection of quick-service restaurants. GoodLife Fitness is one of the first new tenants to open. “We are extremely pleased to learn that their Deerfoot location is significantly exceeding customer target projections. We see this as an early vote of confidence in the market,” adds Kwiatkowski.

Cabela’s, the World’s Foremost Outfitter® of hunting, fishing and outdoor gear, will open in fall of 2015 and a new Canadian Tire will open in fall 2016. The major demolition of the  mall to create the new high street is scheduled to commence in spring 2016 with completion in fall 2017.

First-in-market retailer signals big changes for Calgary’s retail landscape

CALGARY, AB, July 17, 2014—Shape Properties is pleased to confirm that Cabela’s®, the World’s Foremost Outfitter® of hunting, fishing and outdoor gear, will serve as an anchor tenant in the redevelopment and transformation of Deerfoot Mall. Slated to open in Fall 2015, the 70,000 sq. ft. store marks Cabela’s first entry into the southern Alberta marketplace.

Shape Properties plans to redevelop the existing mall and adjacent vacant lands to create a master-planned, regional urban centre, with features including a pedestrian-friendly network of outdoor streets and plazas interspersed with indoor comforts. A diverse assortment of shops, restaurants and conveniences will be purposefully positioned for an infusion of vibrancy, creating natural social zones and a unique streetscape setting that will create a totally new shopping experience in Calgary.

“We are thrilled to count Cabela’s as an early adopter of our game-changing vision. The addition of Cabela’s to our retail line-up signals the new Deerfoot’s ability to attract world-class, first-in-market tenants,” said Darren Kwiatkowski, executive vice president of Shape Properties. “The strength of its central location, adjacent to the highway and close proximity to the airport, was a key decision making factor for Cabela’s.”

The new Deerfoot offers unparalleled access to consumers in the region, including high visibility with easy access from Deerfoot Trail (Highway 2) – Alberta’s busiest highway with more than 128,000 vehicles passing daily. Nearby are Calgary International Airport’s 24,000 employees, plus a trade area of 900,000 people within a 20-minute drive; the site will provide a central destination for community residents, commuters and tourists alike.
